GameTap has begun rolling out support for 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows on a game-by-game basis. 32-bit versions of both XP and Vista are supported.

Q: Why doesn't GameTap fully support 64-bit yet?
A: Although the technology which allows GameTap to support 64-bit systems has been put in place, each game must be converted to use the new system before it can be made available on 64-bit systems.  This conversion process is ongoing, and GameTap intends to replace one or two games from the back catalog each week in addition to releasing the normally scheduled new games--most, if not all, of which will also be 64-bit compatible.  The order in which games are replaced will be determined based on popularity and customer feedback in addition to technical and organizational factors, such as whether or not the game has already been packaged in the new format.

Q: What parts of GameTap should run on 64-bit operating systems?
A: All in-browser games should work on 64-bit operating systems as well as any desktop games which have been converted to use the new distribution technology.  These games may be quickly identified on GameTap by enabling the 64-bit compatible filter while browsing or searching GameTap's catalog as shown below.





Q: But what if I run GameTap in compatibility mode, will that make the unsupported games work on a 64-bit platform?
A: Unfortunately not.

Q: Is there a timeline on when GameTap will be fully supporting 64-bit?
A: There is currently no estimated date by which all games are expected to be converted to the new, 64-bit compatible format, though expanding the availability of games to users with 64-bit systems is currently one of GameTap's highest priorities.
